Hello everyone,
I’m having a navigation issue with my Telluride during our road trip. Google Maps shows a direct route home with 319 miles remaining and an estimated arrival at 6:30, but the Telluride’s navigation is directing us on a 468-mile route, adding an extra 3 hours and getting us home at 9:48. This happened on our way to the destination too. What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?
We’re not avoiding ferries, carpool lanes, or tolls—none of those options are selected.
I’ve been disappointed with the Telluride’s navigation system as well. It often selects longer routes, changes directions without notice, and has issues with street names. For example, while 30 miles north of McGorn and approaching Highway 82, it incorrectly instructed to turn right onto McGorn.
These problems likely won’t be fixed by map updates, which usually address POIs, new roads, and addresses, rather than software bugs. I prefer using the car’s navigation, especially for its small, convenient display of the next waypoint and distance. It’s reasonable to expect the navigation system to function reliably, just like the car radio.
Besides making sure “Avoid Highways” is not selected, I’d recommend using your phone’s mapping apps. With CarPlay or Android Auto available, I’d avoid using the car’s native navigation, as it doesn’t get updated frequently enough.
While I can’t address your specific issue, I can share that I’ve been disappointed with the Kia built-in navigation compared to Apple Maps or Google Maps on my phone. A major red flag was when the Kia navigation couldn’t find my home address because it still had an outdated street name, even though the correct spelling has been in use for over five years.
I bought a wireless CarPlay/Android Auto adapter from Amazon and haven’t looked back. I now use my phone’s navigation for road trips, which offers real-time updates on speed traps, disabled vehicles, detours, and traffic jams.
I assume Kia maps haven’t been updated in ages and don’t account for road closures. I’ll check Google Maps first, and if it matches or if I’m traveling a long distance on the freeway, I’ll use the Telluride’s map as a backup or placeholder.
By 2024, it’s widely known that built-in car navigation systems are often unreliable. It’s better to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. They offer a much better experience, with Apple Maps being quite reliable now and Google Maps also available through CarPlay.
