Thinking about buying a Kia Telluride but worried about reliability

Was that mechanic from the Kia or Hyundai dealership? :joy:

No wonder he sees so many come into the shop.

I’m not worried about it. The warranties are great. It’s not a huge deal if something breaks down since I will have it covered

I just got my 2022 SX P Telluride after trading in my 2014 SX Sorento. I had 120,000 miles on it and the only issue was the alternator which went out last summer. My husband replaced it and there’ve been no issues since. I only upgraded because I drive a lot for work and wanted to trade it in before piling on more miles. Before my Sorento, I had an Edge. That thing had a ton of warning lights on all the time and had radio issues at one point. My mom has an Edge now and it’s also having many electrical problems. I considered getting an Explorer before choosing the Telluride and everyone I know with an Explorer advised against it

@Amory
My brother-in-law had an Edge for a few years and it was in the shop every couple of months. Absolutely terrible vehicle

I’ve been buying Kias for about seven years now—Optima, Sedona, Sorento, Rio, Telluride.
None of them reached 100k miles but they all went at least 50k (except for the Telluride, since it’s new).
No issues with any of them.

We bought a new 2019 Sorento in late 2018, trading in a 2015 Forte with 80,000 miles. The Sorento is still with us (around 60,000 miles), and so far there have been no issues at all. We picked up a 2023 Telluride SX-P in November and have only driven a couple thousand miles, but it’s been perfect so far. Since around 2015, we’ve only bought new Kias of different models and engines and have put good miles on them (other than the Telluride so far) without any problems! stands up to knock on wood trim

I have 15,000 miles on my 2022 SX-P and haven’t had any issues yet. For the price, you can’t beat the technology and comfort

Between my wife and me, we’ve had a RAV4, 4Runner, and Tacoma before the 2022 Telluride, and had tons of problems with the RAV4 and Tacoma. They were much less comfortable by comparison. All the Toyotas felt cheap to me and it seemed like I was paying extra for a supposed reliability

@Cliff
What kind of problems did you have with those vehicles in particular?

The issues that Toyota enthusiasts often refuse to admit. Look at how high the prices are for older Toyotas with a lot of miles. Why would anyone pay $25,000 for an old truck that’s been through so much? I used to think Tacomas were the best around until I worked at a dealership. The Frontier is also a strong choice, but without the extra reputation. People used to swap Tacomas for Frontiers all the time because Tacomas often needed major repairs.
That said, I would definitely avoid any Hyundai or Kia models with the 2.4 engine. Their six-cylinder cars seem pretty solid, but I recommend considering options around the 150,000-mile mark. I’ve seen a few with 200,000+ miles, but those were either junk or should have been. From reading these threads, it seems like many people have had quick turnovers. A comment saying ‘I have 20,000 miles with no problems’ doesn’t give much insight. Or, ‘I’ve had three since 2020 and they’ve been great.’ If you’re measuring reliability with cars that aren’t even broken in yet, you’re looking in the wrong place. I would hope my $47,000 brand new SUV has no problems in the first 24 months and 30,000 miles

@Amir
You’re right about the high resale values for those vehicles

I traded my wife’s Highlander for the Telluride. It’s a 2021 EX with 21,000 miles. The first winter, the heater would only work when the vehicle was moving. It would blow air but heat only came on when I was driving (it took the dealership two winters to figure it out; they found that the thermostat was closed and not working from the factory). Now, there’s a mystery rattle coming from the interior near the sunroof, and the dealership has to remove the entire roof fabric to see what’s going on. I’ve taken it to them three times, and on the third visit, they got tired of doing quick fixes and actually want to fix it this time. All that said, I wouldn’t buy another Kia. We’ve treated this vehicle very carefully and it still hasn’t held up well. But everyone has different experiences; I’m only sharing mine. Good luck

@Amory
You may be the first to share a negative experience. Sorry to hear your new car has so many problems

The ride is amazing though. The seats are comfortable and it’s spacious, much better than the Highlander. We haven’t faced any ‘major’ mechanical issues, if that helps

@Amory
It’s only not considered major because it’s been covered under warranty. Fixing a sunroof can be very expensive. It’s not as costly as a transmission replacement, but still an unnecessary expense. These should work reliably throughout the life of the vehicle without issues. They’ve been using sunroofs for a long time and they’re not that complicated. I’m puzzled why any of them would have problems. My Mazda has 307,000 miles and the sunroof works just like it always has—no squeaks, rattles, leaks or anything

My brother-in-law’s dad is a mechanic and he swears by Kias—they own a Telluride and a Sorento.

I’m not saying he’s right or anything; just that people often make claims without much backup. But you can definitely count on that warranty.

We have a 2019 Kia Sedona with around 70,000 miles and zero issues

I have a 2020 Telluride and after 3.5 years, I have had no problems at all

How has the car been holding up for you?

Everything is great. My partner has a Honda Pilot and I drive both. Without a doubt, I can say that the 2020 Telluride is way better than the 2022 Pilot.

My mom’s mechanic says the same thing. He would never buy a Kia (I think I mentioned that too).

Knock on wood, my 2020 hasn’t had any issues and I really enjoy driving it. I’m at about 40,000 miles now

I got a 2021 EX, drove it for 36,000 miles without issues, then traded it for a 2023 SX and I’m absolutely loving it
